It also works with the Passport Media player so you can add some virtual reality fun as it syncs your TV running with your treadmill (Horizon’s answer to Nordictrack’s iFit LIVE).

Other highlights include the ultra-quiet motor and the media shelf above the bright, backlit console.

Horizon Adventure 5 Treadmill Review – the Pros:

Johnson Drive System Motor

The Adventure 5 treadmill comes with a Johnson Drive system motor (Johnson owns the Horizon name). This responsive digital drive system continuously recalibrates with each footfall. It adjusts instantly to each change in speed (this is similar to what Precor motors do – and a lot of people feel it gives them a better running workout).

This also helps to keep the motor cool – which helps your motor to last longer, even with long periods of use.

Another bonus to this drive system is that it runs extremely quiet. So if you have kids that are sleeping during the day when you’re using the treadmill, this is a great feature to have.

ViaFit Connectivity

horizon viafitThe ViaFit connectivity on this treadmill lets you store and send your home workout information to the popular fitness apps like myfitness pal, fitbit and other tools you use.

A lot of people today use some sort of fitness tracking app to set new goals and achieve more with their workouts. This is actually a great – and motivating way to track your stats and see how far you’ve come.

MediaShelf For Your Tablet or Kindle

While it may see like a small thing, most people will love this feature. There is a media shelf in the middle of the console that can hold a small tablet, kindle, magazine or book.

Another thing you’ll like about this is that it does not cover the console window. So you can watch your tablet and still see your fitness stats at the same time.

Extra Long 60 Inch Belt

Runners will love the extra room as this belt is a full 60 inches long, giving them extra space to stretch out and pick up their pace.

Backlit Console with Racetrack Display

The console on this treadmill is backlit and pretty intuitive (i.e. you don’t need to read the manual to figure out how it works).

It gives you constant feedback on your time, distance, incline, speed, calories, heart rate, and laps.

Folding With Hydraulic System

This treadmill folds easily up and out of the way. The deck uses a hydraulic shock system to make it very easy to lift and lock the deck into place.

There are rollers on the bottom to make it easy to move around (although the treadmill is still pretty heavy – so it’s not something you’ll want to do every day).

Works With Passport Media Player

The Horizon Adventure 5 treadmill works with the Passport Media Player. You hook the media player up to your TV and can run trails all over the world for a more “virtual reality” training experience.

Note however that the media player is not included with this treadmill – you have to purchase it separately here.

Horizon Adventure 5 Treadmill Review – The Cons:

Media Player Extra

passport media playerWhile you don’t need the Passport Media Player to use this treadmill, if you do want to try it out, it does cost extra. You can buy it here for about $199.

While this is Horizon’s answer to Nordictrack’s iFit LIVE, it currently doesn’t give you as many trail options to run (there are currently only 2 trails vs iFit which is pretty much unlimited) – and it’s more expensive up front.

No Wireless Heart Rate Monitor

The Horizon Adventure 5 treadmill does not include a wireless heart rate monitor as some other treadmills at this price point offer.

Bottom Line?

The Horizon Adventure 5 is really a bridge treadmill – a little higher end than Horizon’s starter models, but lower-priced than their commercial-grade models. Compared to the Adventure 3 treadmill it gives you a longer belt, larger console and more workout programs.

It also houses a slightly heavier deck with a heavier unit weight to add some stability – great for runners. Overall it’s a well-built, quiet treadmill that would suit walkers or occasional runners
